To compliment the work that we are doing in Bangladesh and other countries around the world, AFGRP held a weekend of events at the Eden Project to raise awareness of development issues amongst the British public. This extravaganza took place over the 2004 August Bank Holiday weekend (27-30th) and included music, drama, food and exhibitions. Around 20,000 visitors came to visit over the weekend. In addition we have been working with the Eden Project to develop a rice-fish exhibit to help celebrate International Year of Rice within the Humid Tropic Biome on-site in Cornwall. The display demonstrates the role that fish play in rice fields as part of both integrated pest management (IPM) and decentralised seed production systems being developed in Bangladesh.
In March this year Dr Benoy Barman, who is managing field work in Bangladesh, and Anton Immink from AFGRP visited the Eden Project for a day. Benoy enthused staff members at Eden with tales of fish production in the rice fields of Bangladesh and raised issues relating to biodiversity from rice fields, fish as agents in IPM and the role of the whole family in ensuring sustainable food production methods. The displays and events aimed to raise awareness amongst the public of issues relating to international development.
