| Introduction to integration of aquaculture in irrigation systems | |
| Raising fish in irrigation systems could be a fundamental part of adopting a multiple use approach to using water more efficiently. As both wild fish stocks and water become resources under pressure there is increasing interest in evaluating the integration of aquaculture within irrigation systems. Stocking fish within the physical structures used to capture, store and transfer water potentially increases overall benefits but the practice is poorly developed. ... Such engineer-managed systems are typically large-scale, storing water in reservoirs before supplying farms through networks of canals. The culture of fish within reservoirs, canals and seepage zones has potential and these are the focus for project R7123 working in the Lower Bhavani irrigation system, Tamil Nadu, India and Mahawelli H system, Northwest province in Sri Lanka. Such systems supply high potential agriculture but a much larger proportion of farming households in Asia have no access to such systems. The potential for integration of fish culture within smaller, farmer-managed systems important in rain-fed areas is being assessed by project R7064. |
